What is a UTM parameter?
UTM parameters (Urchin Tracking Module — the code Google's analytics grew out of) are tags appended to a URL. Your analytics tool reads them on every visit and attributes the visit to the exact campaign, platform and link that brought it — so "1,200 visits from email" becomes "740 visits from the March newsletter's bottom CTA". A tagged link looks like:
https://example.com/landing?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=spring_launch| Parameter | Answers | Example |
|---|---|---|
| utm_source | Who sent the visit (required) | newsletter |
| utm_medium | What kind of channel (required) | email, cpc, social |
| utm_campaign | Which specific push (required) | spring_launch |
| utm_term | Paid search keyword (optional) | running+shoes |
| utm_content | Which creative or link variant (optional) | header-cta |
Keep values lowercase and consistent — Spring_Sale and spring_sale count as two different campaigns in most tools, splitting your numbers in half.

Krawlup analytics reads utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign on every pageview and breaks campaigns out next to channels and referrers — cookieless, with revenue attribution on top. Or start with a free report on the page you're about to promote.
FAQ
What is a UTM parameter?
Tags you add to a URL — utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign, plus the optional utm_term and utm_content. Analytics tools read them to attribute each visit to the campaign, platform and exact link that brought it, so "traffic from email" becomes "visits from the March newsletter button".
Is this UTM builder free?
Yes — every mode, no signup and no limits. Links are built entirely in your browser; nothing you type is sent to or stored on our servers. The recent-links list lives in your browser's local storage only.
Which UTM parameters are required?
utm_source (who sent the traffic), utm_medium (the kind of channel) and utm_campaign (the specific push). utm_term and utm_content are optional extras for paid-keyword and A/B variants.
Does Krawlup analytics track UTM links?
Yes. Krawlup reads utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign on every pageview and shows a campaign breakdown next to channels and referrers in the dashboard. utm_term and utm_content ride the URL but are not broken out as separate reports.
What are UTM naming best practices?
All lowercase, dashes instead of spaces, and the same name spelled identically every time — spring_sale and Spring Sale count as two different campaigns in most analytics tools. This builder lowercases values for you and warns about spaces and capitals.
